Since the holidays is just around the corner, I decided to list the top 10 things I love about the Holidays. Its my favourite time of the year. It brings people closer together and it promotes sacrificing something for the joy of others. Its an overall a feel good experience.

These are my personal favourite. Let me know what you think.

#1. Gifts

Its not a surprise that Gifts is at the top of the list. Who doesn’t like receiving gifts?. I know I do. It just brings me joy, not because of the gift itself, but really just grateful to the person. For me, the thought that goes into it is the most important thing. I personally don’t care about how much the person spent on it, Unless its really really expensive. Its the thought that counts people.

#2. Food

YES, FOOD! Its second to my list. Its the ultimate cheat month. Since Christmas is my family’s most celebrated event of the year. The amount of food is insane. The varieties of food is amazing and its always different every year. For us living north of the border, we have boxing day after Christmas. The morning of boxing day when you wake up, is the best feeling, “left over food never tasted better “. That’s why most people pack lbs. during this season.

#3. Shopping

Shopping! Shopping! and more Shopping! Its the time where people grind it out at work. Getting over time hours to cope with their spending. We spend more in a week, compared to what we’ve spent in a year total. I think for some people, it’s their way of rewarding themselves.

#4. Christmas parties

We also do secret santas every year. It makes things a lot more interesting and also you save a lot of money that way since you don’t have to get every single one of them a gift.

#5. Relatives away from home

Most of us have relatives away from home. Our grandmother visited us last year from California. It was really nice to see her again after a long time. Its been a while since I’ve last seen her. There’s just no better feeling than spending time with your loved ones. It brings us closer together. Its also a great time to catch up and share stories with them.

#6. Time off from work

YES it is! A couple of days off work is enough to be part of the top 10. It doesn’t need any explanation. More quality time with family and friends for sure.

#7. Christmas Jingles

If you’re living in Toronto, tune in to 98.1. They play Christmas music all day throughout the season. It instantly puts you in the mood for the holidays.

#8. Holiday Ambiance

I don’t know what it is about this season. It just puts you in a good mood. It could be the atmosphere, or the air we breathe. Its the feeling overall for me.

#9. Snow Snow Snow

We associate snow with a lot of activities. Tobogganing is my favourite.  Going down the hill with my makeshift sled made of boxes is the best. You just have to put on more layers to actually enjoy playing outside in the snow.

#10. Midnight Mass

Catholic Christians has a unique way of celebrating Christmas. We attend a series of Church masses every night from the 16th of December to Christmas eve. Most of us believe that if you attend all of it, your wish would come true.  It is also meant to show devotion to God and heightened anticipation for Christ’s birth. Its a tradition.

Parenting 101 : Trust granted not earned

ParentingSS-Post

What brought you to this article? Is it because you want to know if you’re making the right choices as a parent? or are you a soon to be parent?. Well whatever that is, you came here because you were curious. You wanted to increase your knowledge on something that you truly care about. Have you ever asked yourself,

Does my behaviour affect my children’s attitude?,

Am I being over protective?.

These are the questions that we will try to answer as we go along.

Does my behaviour affect my children’s attitude? The only way to answer that question is to put yourself in their situation.

When I was a child growing up. I never liked it when my parents never trusted me with anything. I could never understand why. It just never made sense to me. I was a good child. I always followed the rules.

Parenting frustration

There’s this famous saying,

” trust is not given, it is earned”.

I know most of us would buy into that, and part of it is true. But I believe that starting to build trust with your child at an early age is the right choice. let me explain.

Parents are responsible for building a good trust system between you and your child.

A good example would be my friend, lets call her Dona. Donas parents are very over protective of her. She never did anything wrong. She had a curfew at 6pm. She could never go out with her boyfriend late without having her sister come along. She knows that they are not doing anything wrong and that her parents are being unreasonable She felt like she had no choice but to lie to her parents so that they can be together.

That’s one of the reasons why we lie, and the reason why most children treated that way ends up being rebellious.

Now if you were to trust your child, make them feel that you trust them. You would get a totally different result.

I, myself, would never do anything to break a trust. I value trust more than anything. I would be foolish to break a trust given to me without having to earn them. I think that would be a child’s initial reaction. That is why trusting them early is very important. Its putting them in the right direction.
